One of the Capital Region’s most prestigious bowling events for both elite senior pro bowlers and spectators alike comes to Boulevard Bowl next weekend when the Brian LeClair’s Revolutions Pro Shop Open PBA50 regional is held Oct. 4-6.

Qualifying for the pros begins Oct. 5 at noon. The casher round will begin Oct. 6 at 9 a.m., followed by the match-play finals at noon.

Instead of the originally scheduled pro-am, there will be a free bowling clinic with the pros on Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m., including a Q&A session, a free gift and a chance to win a bowling ball. Clinic participants are asked to sign up before the clinic. Call Boulevard Bowl at 518-374-4717 for more information.

LeClair, 54, had a sensational summer on the PBA50 Tour. He won back-to-back titles, bringing his career total to five, and he also finished third in the Johnny Petraglia BVL Open. The 2017 PBA50 Player of the Year has $779,618.50 in career earnings since joining the PBA Tour in 1984. He owns 18 PBA regional titles and four PBA50 regional titles.

“It was very gratifying having such a successful summer for a couple of big reasons,” LeClair said. “For one, my knee held up a lot better than it did the season before, which was a very disappointing season for me. My left knee blows up when I slide at the line. In everything else I do, even playing golf, it doesn’t bother me, but when I’m tossing a 16-pound ball with some momentum and then coming to a stop, my left knee is basically a brake and shock absorber in one. I also have a loose ACL to make matters worse.

“But the new knee brace I’ve got has been remarkable. It holds my leg in place. I’m not as flexible as I used to be, but the pain is 90-95 percent gone. Sometimes, when I’ve got some adrenaline going, I don’t feel the pain at all.”

Overcoming his knee problems wasn’t the only reason why LeClair was so proud of his summer accomplishments.

“I wanted very badly to let my good friend, Eric Race, watch me win again before he passed away,” LeClair said. “My girlfriend, Amber, took her iPad with her to where he was staying, and he got to see me win again before he died.”

LeClair will be in the field when the tournament is held next week, and he’s also thrilled to be a sponsor.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve always bowled well at Boulevard when the lanes are tougher. As far as having my name on the tournament, it just fits. I’m involved with the PBA50, and I want the PBA regionals to succeed. Don Herrington and I have formed a good partnership. He does a lot of the fund raising and financing, while I put my pro shop behind it and donate some balls. It’s a good partnership, and it’s a great way to give back. Also, [Boulevard proprietor] Mike Scaccia does a great job hosting the event for us.”

STRIKES & SPARES

Schenectady USBC president Bill Nolan reminds all league secretaries that they have 30 days to get their certification paperwork into the Schenectady  USBC office in order to guarantee their league’s prize fund is  bonded. It’s one of the most important reasons for leagues to get sanctioned. Secretaries shouldn’t wait until all their league  members are sanctioned. Send in the paperwork as soon as possible. You can always send in more sanction information and money later.

The Schenectady Women’s Senior Singles Tournament will be held Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at Sportsman’s Bowl. Applications are available from your league secretary or at Sportsman’s Bowl, Towne Bowling Academy or Boulevard Bowl.

Drake Young, who bowls in the Friday junior program at Sportsman’s, rolled a 134 triplicate.

The next Brian Boghosian Seniors and Women’s Scratch Tour event will be the Storm Match Up Open Oct. 12 at Hi-Way Recreation in Wynantskill at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $80, and top prize will be $500, based on 36 entries. Qualifying for the senior men will be in four age divisions: 50-59, 60-69, 70-plus and women of any age. The format is four games of qualifying with one in five advancing to the eliminator finals. Call Boghosian at 413-627-2734 for more information.

Sportsman’s Bowl will host the 41st annual New York Open State Senior Championships Oct. 12-13 and Oct. 19-20. Entry fee will be $60 for doubles, $30 for singles and $10 for a six-game combine. Handicap will be 90 percent of 230. Age divisions will be Class E (age 50-54), Class D (55-59), Class C (60-64), Class B (65-69), Class A (70-74) and Super Senior (75 and older). You may bowl with a senior from another age group. For more information, call 585-343-3736 or email [email protected]. Send entry blanks to NYS USBC 55 Edgewood Drive, Batavia, N.Y. 14020.

Towne Bowling Academy will host its annual Scratch Challenge Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. Entry fee is $80, and one in five will cash for a minimum of $160. Top prize is $1,000, based on 60 entries. The format will be a five-game qualifier over 10 lanes. The top five advance to the stepladder finals.

Also at Towne Bowling Academy, the Albany TNBA Senate Trio Tournament will be held Oct. 26-27 over five squads, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. Entry fee is $30 per bowler, and the top prize, based on 100 entries, is $1,800 per team. Handicap is based on 90 percent of 230, with a maximum handicap of 75 pins per game. Entries must be paid by Tuesday.

The Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York, for bowlers with averages less than 215, has announced its schedule which includes events on Oct. 20 (at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy), Nov. 17 (at Towne Bowling Academy), a doubles tournament on Dec. 15 (back at Uncle Sam Lanes), Jan. 12 (at Town N Country Lanes), March 22 (at Sportsman’s Bowl) and the A.L.B.A.N.Y. Main Event (at Spare Time Latham). All tournaments begin at 9:30 a.m. Handicaps will be 100 percent, but this season, all bowlers will establish a tournament handicap, based on the scores of their first six events.
