TROY -- Three October concerts at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall will delight classical music fans — and all of them are debuts.

On Sunday, it’s pianists Sergei Babayan and Daniil Trifonov; Oct. 18 brings pianist Piotr Anderszewski, who will conduct and play with the Basel Chamber Orchestra; and on Oct. 25, the Polish string quartet/musical cabaret act of MozART visits Troy.

“A year ago, Opus 3 Artists proposed the Oct. 6 and Oct. 18 artists for our series,” said Karl Moscher, board president of the Troy Chromatic Concerts, which is celebrating its 123rd season. “Considering the stature of the pianists and the uniqueness of the programs, we thought they would be an attraction for the series and our audiences. They’re high-level performers.”

Local fans will remember Trifonov, who at 21 appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Saratoga Performing Arts Center during its 2013 season. A student of Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Trifonov has stormed to the heights of the classical piano world, where his impeccable technique and finesse have won him the 2016 Gramophone Artist of the Year award and the 2018 Grammy for Best Instrumental Solo Album.

His and Babayan’s program, which they’ll repeat Oct. 18 at Carnegie Hall and which they’ve done throughout Europe, will be Schumann and Prokofiev works that Babayan arranged for two pianos: Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances”; and Ravel’s “Rapsodie Espagnole” that involves percussionist Gabriel Globus-Hoenich — a rarity for a duo piano concert.

The Basel Chamber Orchestra, which students from various Swiss music schools founded in 1984, has become an international group.

Landing the much-awarded Anderszewski, who will perform two Mozart piano concertos, will make for a satisfying program that includes Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 and a work by Heinz Holliger, one of the orchestra’s frequent conductors.
The MozART group is, however, unique.

“I’d never heard of them,” said Jon Elbaum, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s executive director. “But at a booking conference in New York City, one of the many agents pitched the group. They’re apparently very popular in Poland.”

Elbaum consulted the group’s many YouTube videos and found the quartet “appealing.”

“We’ve had some quirky groups at the hall,” he said with a laugh. “But the MozART has a very visual show. They have great videos. They’re fun, in the vein of Victor Borge’s heritage.”

The four musicians graduated from Polish music conservatories and have been together since 1995. From the beginning, the group decided to focus on doing short musical jokes. A video sampling shows they use props, such as a telephone or putting a mini-tutu around the neck of a violin; or start a piece such as Vivaldi’s Spring from his “The Four Seasons,” then wander off into pop songs about spring.

The group has won numerous awards, tours frequently and has a large fan base, especially in Europe.

There are no program notes, and Elbaum has no idea what to expect.

“People will need a sense of humor,” he said.

The Troy Chromatic Series is offering a ticket discount of $25-$30 if tickets are purchased to both the Oct. 6 and Oct. 18 concerts.
