A couple of “adopted” Capital Region standouts squared off in an exciting position-round finale to cap off an extremely successful Brian LeClair’s Revolutions Pro Shop Open PBA50 East regional last weekend at Boulevard Bowl.

PBA50 regular Ryan Shafer of Horseheads edged amateur Brian Boghosian of Springfield, Massachusetts, 237-213 in the championship game. Basically even through the first six frames, the difference turned out to be a split in the seventh frame by Boghosian.

“When a guy like Brian leaves an open frame, you’ve got to take advantage of it,” said Shafer. “He’s a great bowler.”

Shafer, 53, posted a 7-1 record in match play. Eight bowlers made the match-play finals. Each victory was worth 30 bonus pins. Shafer finished with 2,065 total pins and earned $1,500.

He is definitely no stranger to the Capital Region. Shafer won the 2003 PBA Empire State Open at the now-defunct Bowlers Club. He’s also competed in many scratch events here over the years. He’s won five PBA crowns and 31 regional titles (28 regular, three PBA50).

“It was a very meaningful day for several reasons,” Shafer explained. “I won my 31st regional title at Boulevard Bowl in Schenectady today. It was my first title with Brunswick equipment, and it came in the Capital District, where I won my fourth national title.

“I know it’s a regional, but it’s been a while since I won something. It’s been two years since I signed with Brunswick, and I love being with the company. Things haven’t gone right for me. I came close in a couple of PBA50 stepladder finals, but I always thought these Brunswick balls suited me. It was just a matter of time.”

During the match-play finals, Shafer said he used three new balls: the Phantom, the Radical Closer and the Radical Conspiracy Theory.

Meanwhile, Boghosian is also very familiar with the Capital Region. He runs a regional tournament for senior men and women of all ages, and several stops have been local. He’s also been a regular competitor in area scratch events.

“I especially like this place,” Boghosian said of Boulevard Bowl. “I like these masking units. It reminds me of the place where I learned how to bowl as a kid. I like the center, and I hope I can have one of my tournaments here at some point.”

Bogoshian, the winner of the 1999 USBC Masters, wasn’t sure what happened on his pivotal shot in the seventh frame.

“I honestly liked the shot,” he said. “I was told by some of the guys watching me in the back that I got it right early, but I liked it. The shot was where I wanted to put it, and I stayed down at the line, which is something I was trying to do all during the tournament. Maybe I just got it a little wide of my target, and it hooked back harder.

Ultimately, I liked it when I threw it, but Ryan is a great bowler, and he deserved to win.”

Local representatives made a fine showing. Bill Neumann of Rensselaer, the Columbia High School bowling coach and the Section II bowling co-coordinator, was third, earning $775. Jack Scaccia Jr., the proprietor of Town & Country Lanes, was sixth and earned $720. Don Herrington of Ballston Lake, a co-sponsor of the event, finished 15th with $580, and Ron Unser of Castleton was 16th, earning $575.

Kudos to Herrington and LeClair for their sponsorship, along with PBA East Region director Russ Mills and Boulevard Bowl proprietor and Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer Mike Scaccia for putting on a great event.
