GANSEVOORT -- A drunk Gansevoort driver fled police this week before his car caught fire, state police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, but the driver continued to flee on foot before troopers took him into custody, state police said.

Anthony M. Burnett, 46, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and unlawful fleeing a police officer, misdemeanors.

The incident happened at about 2 a.m. Monday, state police said. Troopers attempted to stop Burnett after he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of North Pines and Worth roads in Gansevoort, police said.

Burnett failed to stop for police and headed south on Route 9. Troopers following him spotted sparks from under Burnett's vehicle and then a fire erupted, state police said.

Burnett came to a stop at Gailor Road and fled on foot, police said. He was arrested a short time later.

Burnett's vehicle became engulfed in flames, requiring fire crews to respond.

Police said Burnett showed signs of intoxication at the scene and provided a breath sample at the station of 0.08 percent.

Burnett was arraigned and ordered held on $500 bail.
