Jacob Rivers enjoyed one of those unforgettable nights on the lanes last week, when every shot was nearly perfect. Known for high-scoring outbursts, he’s hoping to ride his recent hot streak as long as he can.

The 25-year-old Colonie High School and SUNY Schenectady graduate rolled games of 279, 300 and 299 for a house-record 878 triple in the Guys & Dolls league at Spare Time Latham. It was his 20th perfect game and his career-best triple.

“I really wasn’t thinking about what it all meant until my teammates told me how well I was doing in the fifth or sixth frame of the third game. I knew I was doing great, but I wasn’t paying attention to what the scores meant,” said Rivers, who was using his new MOTIV Forge Fire ball.

“I left a ringing 10-pin in my first game, and I left a 4-pin in my third game,”  he said. “I started feeling a little bit of nerves on my second shot in the 10th frame of that third game. I ended up tripping the 7-10 split, and then I was thinking that I might get my first back-to-back 300 games. I was shaking a little on my last shot. I tugged it in a little. It held, but I left that 4-pin.

“It’s funny. I heard everyone clap when I carried my first shot in the 10th frame of that last game. When I tripped the 7-10 split, the whole bowling alley erupted behind me. I was in awe. But I didn’t want to get too amped up or too energized. I wanted to have a chance for that second 300 game in a row. I was a little heartbroken at first because I didn’t get the back-to-back perfect games, but I wasn’t really focusing on that until afterwards.”

Rivers, who majored in culinary arts in college,  has been comfortable shooting high scores ever since he was a junior bowler. He won several of the now-defunct Huck Finn televised junior championships, led the Joey Schmidt Junior Pro-Scoring Traveling League in average one season and continued shooting excellent scores in high school. Then he was part of the SUNY Schenectady dynasty.

“We were the best-ranked junior college in the country at one point, and in my second year there, with help from coach Ray Ross and my family members, my averaged sky-rocketed to the high 220s and into the 230s,” he said.

“I once won the Lansingburgh Bowling Team Booster Club tournament at Alpha when I was lights-out all day. I didn’t shoot a game under 240 and had something like 240, 250, 270 and 270 in qualifying.  I shot an 866 triple in the Leona Smith Team Tournament one year, and just last week I finished second in Sammy Ventura’s Eliminator tournament in Syracuse. I shot a 286 game and was second in qualifying there.

“Every so often, I get into a zone, and it seems that everything falls my way. I still have nights when I struggle, but that only makes you better, and you work harder on your game.”

Rivers, who currently bowls in three leagues, recorded a high average of 234 last year at Town & Country Lanes. On the same night I interviewed him for this column, he posted his ninth career triple, a 288-804, at Del Lanes.

“I’ve had five or six of my perfect games at Spare Time Latham, where I’ve bowled since I was a kid, but I’ve also had five or six at Del Lanes,” Rivers said. “I’m really starting to get into the groove of things. Now, hopefully, I want to continue my league bowling success into more  tournament success.”

The next Brian Boghosian’s Brian B Scratch Tour tournament for senior men and women of all ages will be held Sunday at Uncle Sam Lanes. Entry fee is $80, and qualifying in different age groups for the eliminator finals is four games.
