ROTTERDAM -- A FedEx truck driver suffered serious injuries Monday when the brakes on his delivery truck apparently failed and he was thrown from the vehicle before it crashed, police said.

The driver was taken to Albany Medical Center with what police described as severe injuries.

The crash happened on Putnam Road near West Campbell Road just before 11 a.m. Monday, police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Collins said.

The driver was heading down the Putnam Road hill toward West Campbell when he reported losing his brakes, Collins said.

He then lost control of the truck. It went off the right hand side of the road, hit some mailboxes and tree stumps. The driver was ejected from the truck at 81 Putnam Road and hit the rear window of a parked car, Collins said.

Collins did not identify the driver, but said he was 41 and from Cohoes.

The truck then crashed into a concrete pillar across the street, Collins said. The truck also hit a fire hydrant.

The investigation into the crash continued Tuesday, including into the condition of the vehicle, Collins said. The state Department of Transportation was also involved. Rotterdam EMS responded to the scene.
