Schenectady United States Bowling Congress president Bill Nolan is not necessarily a big numbers guy, but he loves how the statistics are trending for memberships and tournaments that the local association conducts at its three bowling centers: Boulevard Bowl, Sportsman’s Bowl and Towne Bowling Academy.

“I feel we are ahead in memberships, and the tournaments that we ran last year went extremely well,” said Nolan, known as “The Coach.”

“We are up 14% in adult memberships this year over last year, and not all of the league sanction papers are in yet. Our junior programs are stable.

“I want to give a big thank you to all the league secretaries who have sent in their sanction stuff already. There are still a couple left yet to give. That’s always one of the most important things we do early in the season. Now, tournament time is the next biggest thing.”

Besides collecting and tracking sanction information for its leagues, one of the major responsibilities of every local association in the USBC is providing tournament opportunities at every level. This season, the USBC offers both a singles and team tournament for the juniors, and the Open Tournament that includes men’s, women’s and mixed divisions.

First up is the Schenectady USBC Youth Singles Tournament Nov. 10-11 at Towne Bowling Academy. Squad times are 2 p.m. that Saturday and both 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on that Sunday. Entry fee is $12 per person. Handicap is 100% of 240, and there are four divisions: majors (15 years of age and older), juniors (ages 12-14) preps (ages 9-11) and bantams (age 8-and-under). All bowlers must be members of the Schenectady USBC Youth Association.

The 13th annual Schenectady USBC Youth Team Tournament is also set for Towne Bowling Academy on Feb. 9, with squads at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Entry fee is once again just $12 per bowler, and handicap will be 100% of 880 for the four-person teams. The girls will have one division. The boys’ teams will be divided into Class A (total handicap over 601) and Class B (handicap of 600 and under), while the mixed division will have Class A (551 and over handicap), Class B (451 to 550) and Class C (450 and under handicap).

Schenectady USBC’s most popular event is its relatively new Open Tournament, set for Feb. 7-16 at Boulevard Bowl. Various other formats struggled to attract bowlers in recent years, until the association tweaked this format and began promoting it more to bowlers outside the region.

“We had 78 teams last year, and we’d like to hit 100 teams this year,” Nolan said. “One new addition will be that we will offer both scratch and handicap brackets this year. We will also continue to have the penny raffle for bowling balls, and we’re thinking about even having more ball raffles in-house as we go into each center to promote the event.”

The Open Tournament will include a three-person handicap and scratch team event, as well as both handicap and scratch singles. There will be men’s, women’s and mixed divisions. Squads will be 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Feb. 8, 6 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 9:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 16.  Handicap will be 90% of 240, and first place for the team handicap event will be $1,200, based on 80 teams. Entry fee is $25 per person for the handicap team event, plus $10 each for handicap singles, scratch singles or scratch team.

In other Schenectady USBC news, the association has updated both its Facebook page (Schenectady Bowling Association-SBA) and its website www.usbc-sba.com. Entry blanks for all the tournaments are available there.

Also available on the Schenectady USBC website is the new form for petitioning membership into the Schenectady USBC Hall of Fame. If you know of worthy bowlers for membership, fill out a form and get it to the Schenectady USBC office at Boulevard Bowl or to a Schenectady USBC officer. To be considered, a bowler must have competed for at least 20 years in Schenectady USBC leagues. Deadline for applications is March 1.

For questions on tournaments, sanctions, Hall of Fame memberships and more, contact the Schenectady USBC office at 518-370-0614. The email address is [email protected]. Office hours are Monday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday night from 6-8 p.m. Chet Ciembronowicz (518-577-8562) is the chairman of the Hall of Fame committee. Lloyd Denny is the association manager.

STRIKES & SPARES

Sad to hear that the Brian B Scratch Tournament series for senior men and women of all ages is no more. Tournament director Brian Boghosian said he drew only 13 bowlers in each of his last two events.

The next Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York tournament will be Nov. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Towne Bowling Academy. Only bowlers with averages less than 215 are eligible. Handicap is 100% to 215, with a maximum of 75 pins per game. Entry fee is $30 if paid by Nov. 10 or $45 after that. Call Jim Burton at 518-209-4748 for more information.

Sportsman’s Bowl’s Tavern Tournament will be held Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Handicap for men’s, women’s or mixed five-person teams will be 100% of 220. Entry fee is $125 per team. One in six teams will cash. First place will be $550, based on 28 teams.

The second annual NYSCOPBA Over/Under Doubles Tournament will be held at Towne Bowling Academy Nov. 22-24. First place will be $3,000, based on 60 teams. Entry fee is $140. One bowler must be 50 or older. Squads are 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 and 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Nov. 24. The same teams can re-enter for $100.
