In the Pocket: Vanderbogart knows how to get pins

Roy Vanderbogart began his athletic career trying to pin his opponents as a 98-pound wrestler at Saratoga Springs High School. Now he knocks the pins down with uncommon frequency as one of the Capital Region’s most successful bowlers.

Vanderbogart didn’t start bowling until he was 18 years old, but he quickly became proficient. Now, after just turning 50 a couple of weeks ago, the Wilton native recently recorded his eye-catching 88th career perfect game while competing in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League at Towne Bowling Academy.

“I never picked up a bowling ball until I was 18. A friend introduced me to the game,” Vanderbogart said. “In my senior year, I broke my ankle in practice, and I couldn’t wrestle any more. I had a 158 average my first year bowling, and then when Dick Canale taught me how to make a 10-pin, my average jumped all the way to 191 my second year.”

Vanderbogart learned he had a natural talent for the game, and he began stringing together numerous impressive milestones along the way.

He’s recorded more than 50 800 career triples, including an 867 at his old hometown bowling center, Saratoga Strike Zone, where he also registered a 1,126 four-game series. Vanderbogart once averaged an impressive 241 during the 2009-11 season at Saratoga Strike Zone in a Friday night league there.

In the only PBA Tour event he entered, the 1996 PBA Greater Hartford Open, Vanderbogart rolled a perfect game. He was one of four bowlers to roll one that week.

He’s competed in many PBA regionals events over the years, and also won a New England Bowling Association tournament, considered one of the top scratch bowling associations around.

One of his favorite memories was winning the now defunct World Team Challenge in Staten Island with Brandon Bickford, Sean Bickford, John Bickford and Dave Stewart.

“They [those team events] were very hard, but they were also a lot of fun,” Vanderbogart recalled.

He and his teammates still hold the USBC record for a two-man, one-woman team game score of 875, rolled at Saratoga Strike Zone.

“I don’t really know what you would call my style,” he said. “I guess you could say I’m a power tweener. I’m caught between a tweener and a cranker.”

Although he’s bowled in the greater Saratoga Springs region all of his life, he finally decided to try Towne Bowling Academy in the Schenectady USBC on a team called Broadway Lanes this year.

“Justin Barcomb and I talked about coming down there, just to get out of the norm and do something. We wanted to go down there and showcase our talents,” he said. “Helen Waite and Mark Ross decided to join us. It’s definitely been a lot of fun. There are a lot of good bowlers there, and Marty [Caputo Jr.] is a great guy and great proprietor. I have no problem supporting him, and I still support my old house. I’ve always scored well at Towne in tournaments over the years. The shots are similar to Broadway Lanes, only the lanes maybe hook a little more at Marty’s place.”

Now that he’s bounced back from a few physical ailments, like a torn bicep tendon and golfer’s elbow, Vanderbogart feels like a kid again on the lanes.

“My goals now are to get to 100 perfect games, and now that I’m 50, I’d like to bowl in more senior tournaments,” said Vanderbogart, who is  big proponent of EBI products, especially his weapon of choice, the Hammer Statement Pearl.

Veteran PBA standouts Patrick Healey and Bob Learn Jr. were recently elected to the USBC Hall of Fame in the outstanding performance category, while Andrew Cain and Jim Zebehazy were elected in the meritorious service category. Healey, 51, of Niagara Falls, was a three-time member of Team USA. He earned 24 victories in international competition and had three PBA Tour victories, including the PBA Tournament of Champions in 2003. Learn, 57, of Erie, Pennsylvania, won five PBA Tour titles, including the 1999 U.S. Open, and also has three PBA50 crowns. The former guest speaker at the Schenectady USBC Awards and Hall of Fame banquet is nicknamed “Mr. 300.” He has more than 120 sanctioned perfect games.

Sportsman’s Bowl’s Tavern Tournament will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. Handicap for men’s, women’s or mixed five-person teams will be 100% of 220. Entry fee is $125 per team. One in six teams will cash. First place will be $550, based on 28 teams.
