Throughout the regular season and its games in the Section II postseason, the Stillwater girls’ soccer team stayed consistent with valuing the day-to-day process of getting better.
“But now that we’re getting closer to where we want to be,” junior Devon Wagner said after Wednesday’s area Class C championship win, “we definitely need to focus even more.”
The lone Section II team to win a state championship in 2018, Stillwater is one of 10 area soccer teams playing Saturday in the state quarterfinals. For the Warriors, their Class C quarterfinal will see them play 3 p.m. Saturday against Section VII’s AuSable Valley at Beekmantown.
Stillwater hasn’t lost a game since it finished as the state runner-up in 2017. The Warriors have gone unbeaten for 43 games, and bring an 18-0-2 mark into this weekend’s action.
Still, Wagner said, Stillwater knows a return trip to the state’s final weekend of soccer isn’t guaranteed to it.
“There’s definitely nerves it could be your last game,” said Wagner, who scored one of Stillwater’s goals in its 6-2 Section II championship win against Voorheesville. “But we always pull it together. By game time, the nerves are gone.”
Along with Stillwater, Class A’s Mohonasen brings with it a No. 1 state ranking into this weekend’s action. Undefeated through 20 games, Mohonasen will play at noon Saturday against Section III’s Jamesville-DeWitt at Mechanicville High School.
Other girls’ soccer state quarterfinals set to be played Saturday at Mechanicville High School include a 2 p.m. Class AA game between Bethlehem and Section III’s Fayetteville-Manlius, and a 4 p.m. Class B contest between Schalmont and Section III’s Central Valley Academy.
Meanwhile, Northville — Section II’s Class D champion — will play 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Section IX’s Mount Academy at Goshen High School.
Three Section II boys’ soccer teams will play their state quarterfinals Saturday at Colonie High School.
At Colonie, Class AA’s Shenendehowa takes on Section III’s undefeated Baldwinsville at 3:30 p.m., Class A’s Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake plays Section III’s Jamesville DeWitt at 11 a.m., and Class D’s Fort Ann plays Section IX’s Mount Academy at 1 p.m.
In state quarterfinals Saturday at Clarkson University, Class B’s Schuylerville plays Section X’s Ogdensburg Free Academy at 3 p.m., and Class C’s Voorheesville plays Section X’s Madrid-Waddington at 1 p.m.
Field hockey teams from Guilderland and Johnstown will play state quarterfinals Saturday at Vestal High School.
Class A’s Guilderland will play Section IV’s Maine-Endwell at 1 p.m.
Class C’s Johnstown will play Section IV’s Greene at 11 a.m.
