There was a time when Nick Miseno was a top contender for a trophy presentation every time he stepped on the lanes. That was especially true when the conditions were tough.

The Amsterdam native is now 51, and he says he’s back and better than ever.

Miseno, who currently lives in Ballston Lake, proved he still has the right stuff over the weekend when he won the prestigious New York State Senior Masters title over a relatively small (62 entries), but extremely strong field that included such standouts as senior PBA pros Ryan Shafer and Sammy Ventura and local regional pro Don Herrington at Owego Bowl in Owego.

Miseno defeated Bill Young of Cortland 436-372 in the two-game finals.

“It was a good field,” said Miseno, who is celebrating his 25th year as an Amsterdam High School teacher. “The lanes were wood, and that did create more friction. But it was a longer oil pattern. I could get settled into a certain zone on the lane. I was playing inside a bit, but they changed because of the amount of oil there was on the lanes.”

Miseno, who earned $800 for the win, picks and chooses the events he competes in these days, but he still works hard on his game.

“I mainly practice two or three times a week, getting ready for tournaments on the weekends,” he said. “Practice helps me stay in the flow of it, and it’s been working out well. I’m into a nice rhythm now, and it makes me more effective.”

Miseno credits several things for his current success.

“My wife [Isabel] is very supportive,” he said. “We have our 10th anniversary coming up soon. She travels with me a lot, although she couldn’t come with me on this trip. She’s been an inspirational part of my bowling well lately. That along with building up my mental game. It has a lot to do with my faith. I’m a stronger person now. I’ve always been an emotional player, but my faith helps me focus better when I’m on the lanes.”

Always a factor on challenging conditions, Miseno has two other NYS titles under his belt, a pair of open division NYS Masters wins. But his resume is loaded with other big wins, including four PBA regional crowns, 13 old Northern Bowlers Association triumphs and six Huck Finn tournament titles.
Miseno also finished second five times in New England Bowling Association events, and he was part of the large Capital Region contingent that competed in the old PBA Empire State Open at the now-defunct Bowlers Club.

The Ebonite staffer owns 69 perfect games and 18 800 triples. Over the weekend, he used several Ebonite products, including the Futura and the Track Macro in the finals.

“The thing I’m probably most proud of is my longevity,” said Miseno, whose younger brother Mike will be his partner in the upcoming NYSCOPBA Over/Under Doubles at Towne Bowling Academy. “The fire still burns, and I still want to compete. I love it.

“By God’s grace, I can still do it. I’m throwing the ball the best I’ve ever thrown it right now.”

STRIKES & SPARES

The Cole family announced the closing of Tartan Lanes, formerly Scotia Lanes and more recently Rolling Greens, this week. Sorry to hear about this, as it’s yet another closing of a longtime local bowling center.

After averaging 211.2 pins per game and winning the Wright State (Ohio) Raider Classic last week, Schenectady High School and SUNY Schenectady product Lauren Piotrowski of UPikeville (Ky.) was named the Mid South Conference women’s bowler of the week for the fifth time of the season and sixth time of her career.

The next Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York event, for bowlers with averages less than 215, will be a singles tournament Sunday at Towne Bowling Academy at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee is $45. Handicap is 100% of 215, with a maximum of 75 pins per game. Call Jim Burton at 518-209-4748 for more information.

Kylie Largeteau of Towne Bowling Academy rolled a 267-638 to pace the girls, and Brennon Belding of Hometown Lanes tossed a 278-669 to lead the boys in last week’s Joey Schmidt Capital District Junior Pro-Scoring league. Andrew Bauer (266-656) of Spare Time Clifton Park was the boys’ runner-up. Liz DeLorenzo (204-600) of Towne Bowling Academy was second for the girls.

The second annual NYSCOPBA Over/Under Doubles Tournament is scheduled for Towne Bowling Academy Nov. 22-24. First place will be $3,000, based on 60 teams. Entry fee is $140. One bowler must be 50 or older. Squads are 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 23 and both 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Nov. 24. The same teams can re-enter for $100.

Don’t forget that there are plenty of Thanksgiving week tournaments this year. Here is a partial list: Turkey Doubles Nov. 27 at Broadway Lanes at 6 p.m.; Turkey Shoot at Town & Country Lanes on Thanksgiving Day, 9:30 a.m.; third annual Thanksgiving Challenge at East Greenbush Bowling Center Thanksgiving Day at 9:30 a.m.; Red Richards Memorial Thanksgiving Tournament at Uncle Sam Lanes Thanksgiving Day at 9 a.m.; Turkey Day Adult-Youth Doubles Nov. 29 at Boulevard Bowl at 11 a.m.; Thanksgiving Eve Doubles at Green Island Lanes, Nov. 27 at 9 p.m.; Albany Invitational Baker Tournament at Del Lanes Nov. 29 at 9:20 a.m.

Towne Bowling Academy’s 10th annual Handicap Team Tournament begins Dec. 6 at 9:30 p.m. In total, there will be 23 squads over 14 days through Jan. 26. Top prize will be $4,000 guaranteed. There also will be an optional singles event, using your team score. First place for the singles event will be $450. A 3-6-9 jackpot and a scratch high game jackpot also will be available. Entry fee is $40 per person for the team event, $15 for optional singles and $10 for the 3-6-9 and high-game jackpots. Handicap will be 90% of 225, with a maximum of 50 pins per game.
