Broadalbin-Perth, Lake George and Galway also win
State girls' volleyball: Burnt Hills sweeps Massena

Section II powerhouse Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake defeated Section X’s Massena 25-12, 25-4, 25-12 Thursday in a Class A regional semifinal match on the Spartans’ home court.

Carlie Rzeszotarski had 10 kills, Hannah Shell contributed 5 kills and 5 aces and Sofia Pawlusik added 10 digs and three aces for Burnt Hills, which advances to Saturday’s regional final. The 29-5 Spartans will play at Section III champ Jamesville-Dewitt in a 1 p.m. match, with the winner advancing to the state final four.

In its previous match, Burnt Hills beat Queensbury to capture its 18th consecutive Section II crown. 

CLASS B

Section II champ Broadalbin-Perth took a straight-set victory against Ogdensburg Free Academy. The Patriots topped the Section X school 25-7, 25-16, 25-18 in a match played at Gloversville High School. Broadalbin next plays Peru of Section VII at Beekmantown High School at noon Saturday.

CLASS C

In a match played at Gloversville High School, Lake George swept Canton of Section X 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 to advance to the regional final. The Warriors play again at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beekmantown High School. Their opponent in the regional final is Section VII champ Saranac Lake.

CLASS D

In another match played at Burnt Hills, Galway defeated Chateaugay of Section X 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 in regional semifinal play. Eighth-grader Amber Kolpakas tallied 13 kills and three blocks, while sophomore Julia Reedy also helped the Golden Eagles dominate at the net with 12 kills. Junior Katy Kurtzner and senior Anna Gardner each added five kills for Galway. Freshman Jayden DeVilles had 12 service points and four kills.

The 16-1 Golden Eagles next play in the state quarterfinal round against Section VII’s Northern Adirondack. That match is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Beekmantown High School.
