Old-school guy Steve Hallenbeck is taking a page out of the new-school play book, and it’s paying off with some big scores lately.

Hallenbeck’s recent purchase of three new bowling balls has resulted in three perfect games and a trio of 1,000 four-game series — at three different local bowling centers. The 57-year-old Guilderland native and current Albany resident rolls at Town & Country Lanes, Towne Bowling Academy and Sportsman’s Bowl.

“There’s no doubt about it — the new equipment has definitely helped me out,” Hallenbeck said. “I’m an old-school guy. I like to make changes with my feet, speed and hand position. But these days, everyone is switching balls all the time.

“I’m a feel bowler, and I can still throw the ball pretty hard. Part of the reason I never switched balls that much before was because I didn’t like not having the same feel in my thumb hole when I changed balls. Now, I’ve got replaceable thumb inserts in all of my bowls, and I’ve got exactly the same feel in all three.”

Hallenbeck gives tons of credit for his recent hot streak to Towne Bowling Academy Action Bowling Supply pro shop operator Matt Fazzone, as well as some advice from good friend Nick Stricos.

“I’ve got to give a little love to my buddy Nick Stricos,” Hallenbeck said. “I bowl with him quite often, and he was harping on me to get some new equipment with replaceable thumb holes. So I went to Matt Fazzone and he drilled me up three new balls. He did a great job for me.”

For the record, Hallenbeck purchased an Idol Pearl and Hustle, both Roto Grip products, as well as the Storm Super Sonic. He usually uses different balls at different lanes.

Hallenbeck’s resurgence on the lanes is not surprising. He’s been a standout for years.

“When I started bowling in the 1980s, I threw the ball hard down the middle,” he said. “But I’m pretty versatile. I can play anywhere on the lanes, but these days I’m staying right and playing more down-and-in around the second arrow.”

After bowling for the Guilderland High School team, Hallenbeck worked at Bob Daubney’s bowling & billiards store, learning how to drill balls. He grew up bowling with Jack Scaccia Jr. at Town & Country Lanes, and he later ran the pro shop at the now defunct Bowlers Club.

“Honestly, I could still drill up my own bowling balls, but things have gotten so advanced in drilling these days that Nick persuaded me just to let Matt drill me up some new equipment,” Hallenbeck said. “He knows all the new stuff. I just gave him my measurements and he did the work.”

For the younger bowlers who don’t know Hallenbeck’s pedigree, he’s got 71 sanctioned perfect games, as well as numerous other unsanctioned 300s thrown just for fun. He estimates rolling 34 800 triples, with a high of 857. He believes that his high-four-game series of 1,137 is still the Troy Bowling Association record. In that series, he collected three 279 games and a 300.

“I left two 10-pins and a 4-pin in those 279 games,” he recalled.

Hallenbeck won two Northern Bowlers Association championships, and also was part of two New York State Bowling Association team championships.

He’s very proud of winning the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League team title last year at Towne Bowling Academy. Back in the 1990s, he won a bunch of City League championships.

“I just love the competition. Just being around the best bowlers is an honor and a privilege,” Hallenbeck said. “I’ve been bowling against Joe VanDerLinden for years, and now I bowl with him and Liz Kuhlkin in the City League. I thrive on competition. For me, what good is it to bowl if I’m not trying to beat my competition? That’s one of the reasons I started bowling in Schenectady, to bowl in two of their top leagues.”
