Gloversville will not be fielding a varsity girls' basketball team this season, high school athletic director Mike DeMagistris said Tuesday.

"Our numbers don't dictate us having a varsity program," DeMagistris said. "We had a setback."

DeMagistris said that while Gloversville has students who want to play basketball, not enough of them are prepared for the rigors of the varsity level.

"We talked to the kids and we talked to our coaches," DeMagistris said. "It was a collective decision. We wanted to make the best decision. We believe this is the best thing to do for the kids."

Gloversville, which is a member of the Foothills Council, will have a junior varsity girls' basketball team this season, as well as two modified teams.

"We need to look forward," DeMagistris said. "The best thing right now is to play JV, build the program and build confidence, and look to next year. Our goal is to be back at the varsity level next year."

Gloversville graduated four seniors from last season's 10-player varsity roster, including two-time Gazette All-Area first-team selection Harmony Philo, the program's all-time scoring leader and Section II's career record holder for made 3-pointers.

"We lost some talented kids, and some kids decided not to play," DeMagistris said. "We lost another girl with an injury."

Gloversville won 16 games last season and posted 17 victories the season before under then-coach Molly D'Arcy, who stepped away from the program for family reasons. Gloversville hired Emily Parslow to be its new varsity girls' basketball coach this past August. Parslow, who starred at Fonda-Fultonville High School and at Sage College, will join Mary Mulligan to run the JV team.

Gloversville did not field a varsity girls' basketball team in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons because there were not enough varsity-ready students in the program.

"We need to put a product out there that can compete at the varsity level," DeMagistris said.
