Kalynn Carl has already enjoyed tremendous success on the bowling lanes at every level, but her kegling experiences are extra special when her favorite hobby is a family affair.

Carl currently competes three times a week in premier scratch leagues at Sportsman’s Bowl. On Monday nights in the Sportsman’s Majors and on Saturday evenings in the Vitalo Classic, she bowls with both her brother, Justin, and her father, well known bowler/coach Bill. Thursdays, in the Capital District All Star league, it’s just Kalynn and her brother. Unless Bill fills in as a sub.

“It’s so amazing to bowl with both of them,” said the 26-year-old Colonie High School and Arkansas State graduate. “When my mom [Sue] was still bowling, I enjoyed bowling with her, too. I’m very thankful to bowl with both my brother and my dad.”

Although she’s achieved numerous milestones in the scholastic and collegiate ranks, Carl had a breakthrough performance in adult leagues last week, when she led the Vitalo Classic with a 1,008 four-game series.

“I’ve finished second a few times, but I’ve never led one of the scratch leagues here. There’s so many great bowlers in Schenectady,” Carl said.

Using Storm products, the IQ and the Hy-Road X, Carl is averaging 225 Monday nights and between 215 and 225 on Thursday and Saturday nights. She owns four perfect games and a high triple of 796.

“I’m still chasing my first 800 triple,” Carl said. “I shot my 796 back in high school. I needed the first strike in the 10th to get my 800, and I left the big-four split.”

Carl first made a name for herself as a member of the perennial powerhouse Colonie High School team. The Garnet Raiders advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Bowling Championships three times during her scholastic career, and they won two state titles.

Carl then bowled four seasons for Arkansas State, where her team made the national tournament four times and advanced to the final four once. During her senior campaign, she made an all-tournament team.

“I had an unbelievable experience at Arkansas State,” she said .”I loved every second of it. I’d totally go back to it. But it was definitely some culture shock — a real change from up here. The pace of everything down there was a lot slower than here. Plus, people were holding the doors open all the time for me.

“The Southern hospitality was definitely strong. I felt so welcome as soon as I stepped onto their campus. Plus, the food there is great. There was a lot of support for the bowling team on campus.”

It was while competing at Arkansas State that Carl fine-tuned her bowling talents.

“My physical game changed a little, but I grew stronger mentally while I was there,” she said. “It was a combination of the great coaching and the strong competition that I had. My coach was very good at helping me figure out the lanes and the correct ball motion, but I also was exposed to different levels of competition.”

After college, Carl dabbled in the pro ranks, on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association, for one season.

“I learned a lot out there,” she said. “It was a great learning experience, and the stuff I picked up out there I brought back with me here. I’ve taken bits and pieces of information from everywhere I’ve bowled.”

Now that she’s moved back home, Carl is concentrating on improving the sport that her entire family relishes.

“This is the best season I’ve had since I finished college,” she said. “I’m not sure how you would describe my bowling style, but I’m not somebody who hooks the ball tremendously. I’m a little straighter than most. But everybody I talk to tells me that I have a very heavy ball roll.”

STRIKES & SPARES

Sixty-five teams competed in last weekend’s second annual NYSCOPBA Over/Under doubles tournament at Towne Bowling Academy. Every tandem had to include one bowler older than 50 and one bowler younger than 50. Out-of-towners John Conroy and Jim Schabacher split $3,000 for finishing first, but local standouts Tony Palumbo and Jon Askew were second and split $1,500. Other top finishers included Bill Neumann with Mike Neumann ($700); John Walther III with Steve Wagoner ($700), Sammy Ventura with Dave Jacko ($400), Jim Geiger with Jody Becker ($400), Mike Klosin with Adam Michaud ($400), Ryan Shafer with Howie Ayers ($400), Rich Strath with Craig Taylor ($300), R.J. Martinez with Laura Rotter ($300), Liz Kuhlkin with Joe VanDerLinden ($300) and Roy Vanderbogart with Tom Reed ($300).

Mohonasen (large school) and Schalmont (small school) swept their respective boys’ and girls’ titles at the annual Rotterdam Invitational at Sportsman’s Bowl. One of the highlights for the Mighty Warriors was Katie Adamec winning the award for girls’ high triple with a 268-640.
