HAMILTON — For the second time in six games this season, Siena men’s basketball sophomore Jalen Pickett found himself in trouble with head coach Carmen Maciariello.

The first time, it cost Pickett a start in the season opener against American. Saturday, it cost him a whole game, as Pickett didn’t play in Siena’s 72-62 non-conference loss to Colgate at Cotterell Court for what a Siena spokesman called a “violation of team policy.”

In a video clip posted to the Siena men’s basketball team’s Twitter account after the loss, Maciariello addressed Pickett’s absence from the lineup: “Jalen’s a great kid. Nothing malicious. Just trying to get him to be the best he can be and all those details matter.”

Siena (2-4) scored six of the game’s first seven points and led by as many as seven early on at 13-6 following a Jordan King 3 at the 11:59 mark. But Colgate responded with a 15-4 run to claim the lead for good and took a 31-26 advantage at the break.

Manny Camper led the Saints with 17 points, with 12 of those coming in the first half. Donald Carey and Elijah Burns tallied 14 points each.

Jordan Burns scored 25 points to lead the defending Patriot League-champion Raiders (5-3). Will Rayman added 15 points for Colgate, which has won 16 straight against non-Power Five opponents. Reserve Keegan Records contributed 10 points for the Raiders, who have won 33 of their past 37 games at Cotterell Court, including 10 straight.

Siena concludes its season long four-game road trip next Saturday with its first trip to California in seven years. The Saints will play Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo at 10 p.m.
