For the pin-slamming Swiatocha family, many of life’s most memorable moments occur at the neighborhood bowling center.

Last week, Savannah Swiatocha, a former gymnast who is just 12-years-old, rolled her career-best single (265) and triple (722) for the Scotia-Glenville High School varsity bowling team. She made the team as a seventh-grader. Just a few months earlier, she had established her previous all-time bests of 258 and 626, respectively, while bowling in the Towne Bowling Academy junior bowling program.

Meanwhile, her parents, Matt and Kim, have a special bowling bond, as well. Matt proposed to Kim at Sportsman’s Bowl in 2003. Both of them are standout scratch keglers in their own right, and both are members of the Schenectady USBC Board of Directors. Their specialty in terms of committee responsibilities — wait for it — is junior bowling.

“The thing I enjoy the most in bowling is watching Savannah bowl,” Matt said in between shots Monday night at Sportsman’s.

Savannah Swiatocha began her young athletic career as a gymnast, but ankle issues sidelined her. She eventually needed surgery and decided to give up that sport in favor of the family’s favorite pursuit.

“My ankle never healed, so I took a break. After the surgery, I just never went back,” she said. “I always hung around my parents watching them bowl when I was younger, so I decided that I wanted to bowl, too.”

Savannah, who has qualified for the prestigious Junior Gold Championships in Las Vegas in July, admitted that she is more nervous when competing on her scholastic team than she is during her junior program, because there is more on the line with every shot. Among her favorite weapons on the lanes are an Idol Pearl, the ball she shot her 722 triple with, and a Radical Conspiracy.

“I hook the ball, but not a lot,” she said. “I really like competing on the lanes. I also like golfing with my family at Stadium and Mill Road Acres.”

Savannah credits both of her parents, as well as area star Debbie Capullo, with teaching her how to bowl. Lew LaBahn of Amsterdam drills all of the family equipment.

Matt Swiatocha, 39, bowled varsity for Scotia-Glenville High School as a youngster, and the Tartans advanced to the state tournament in 1994. The longtime Watervliet Arsenal employee tossed a career-best 851 high triple three years ago and has averaged as high as 235. He currently bowls in both the Sportsman’s Majors at Sportsman’s Bowl and the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league at Towne Bowling Academy with Kim as his partner. He’s experimented with several different types of bowling equipment over the years, including Track, but is currently using a Storm IQ ball with excellent results.

“I am really interested in helping the junior programs,” said Matt, who owns 20 perfect games and eight 800 triples. “Part of the reason is that Savannah is bowling juniors, but I help out coaching with the Towne program, and I like helping them improve their games.”

Kim Swiatocha also bowled for her scholastic team at Guilderland High School. She was the only girl on the team back then. She gave up bowling for a while after high school, but her mother convinced her to get back into the game and asked her to join her league. Since then, Kim’s passion in the sport has been rekindled, and she gives credit to her mother for the renewed interest.

Currently averaging a career-high 210 in the Mixed Doubles league, Kim rolled her first perfect game last year, and her high triple is a 765.

“The 300 game is my favorite bowling moment so far, but I’m also proud of the two tournaments I won,” she said, referring to this year’s Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York victory and the Town & Country Bracket Tournament two years ago. “And, of course, we both love watching Savannah bowl. We are so excited watching Savannah improve so quickly.”

Keep an eye on the Swiatocha clan. They all love the game, and it’s a safe bet you can eventually find at least one of them at the local bowling center.
