GLENS FALLS -- U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, has been been named an honorary New York state chairwoman of President Donald Trump's re-election campaign, Stefanik's campaign announced this week.
Stefanik, who represents the 21st Congressional District covering the North Country, said she will "work to advance President Trump's results-driven agenda up and down the ballot in New York state."
Stefanik, 35, who is seeking her fourth term in Congress in November, will be serving as an honorary campaign chairperson along with three other New York members of Congress: U.S. Reps. Peter King, Tom Reed and Lee Zeldin. Together, they are four of the five Republicans in the New York state congressional delegation. Only Rep. John Katko of Syracuse isn't listed.
Also holding the title of honorary chair will be New York City Councilman Joe Borelli and Dutchess County Sheriff Butch Anderson.
"I am honored to have been chosen as New York State chair for the Trump campaign in 2020," Stefanik said in a news release. "President Trump's agenda of creating jobs, strengthening our military, securing our borders, negotiating better trade deals and lowering crime rates has historic support in the 21st Congressional District and across upstate New York."
It was unclear Wednesday what campaign duties would be associated with the position.
In 2016, Trump easily carried the 21st Congressional District, though he decisively lost New York state, and remains unpopular in statewide polling.
Stefanik earned praise from Trump, and a higher national profile, including interviews on Fox News, after her sharp questioning of witnesses during the House Intelligence Committee impeachment hearings in November. She has consistently spoken out against Trump's impeachment.
Her performance during the hearings has also raised the profile of her likely November opponent, Democrat Tedra Cobb of Canton. Both candidates have already raised more money toward their congressional campaigns than was spent in 2018, when Stefanik defeated Cobb.
"I'm looking forward to working with [Trump's] campaign to deliver another decisive victory in my district,' Stefanik said.
State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar issued a statement praising the choice of Stefanik.
"Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is no longer a rising star -- she is a glowing firmament in today's political sky," he said. "President Trump and his team could not have chosen a better person to lead 2020 re-election efforts here in New York. The Conservative Party stands ready to work with the congressman (sic) in every corner of the state to extoll the many Trump Administration successes and to support the President's deserved re-election."
