SCHENECTADY - A Schenectady man strangled a woman to the point of unconsciousness Tuesday evening, authorities said.
James C. Provost, 55, of Paige Street, was arrested just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and charged with one count of second-degree strangulation, a felony, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
Provost is accused of strangling the woman just after 7 p.m. at his Paige Street residence, according to police allegations filed in court. The allegations indicate she lost consciousness as a result "for a period of time.'
The misdemeanor assault count relates to allegations Provost punched and kicked the woman in her head and body around the same time as the strangulation, causing pain and swelling, according to the allegations.
Provost was arraigned in Schenectady City Court Wednesday morning and Judge Mark Caruso ordered Provost held on $10,000 bail. Caruso also issued a full stay-away order of protection.
