SCHENECTADY - A Schenectady man facing child pornography possession charges fled the state and has been recaptured in California and has since been returned to New York, state police said.

Lance E. Potter, 44, of Schenectady, was arrested Oct. 11 and charged with one count each of possessing and promoting a sexual performance by a child, felonies.

He was later released, but the last time he appeared in court was Oct. 16, officials said. After missing multiple court dates, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, state police said.

Potter was eventually located in California, where he was taken into custody by law enforcement officers there. He waived extradition and was transported back to Schenectady County by state police investigators Friday. He was also issued a new charged of felony second-degree bail jumping.

The costs of the extradition were paid by the Schenectady County District Attorney's Office.

Potter was taken to the Schenectady County Jail. He appeared in City Court Wednesday and was ordered held, officials said.

Potter was charged in the child pornography case after a joint investigation showed that he possessed and uploaded the child pornography from his Schenectady residence. He was arrested after a search warrant was executed at his home, state police said in October.

The original investigation was conducted by the state police and the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and Schenectady Police Department, state police said.
