In the Pocket: Saratoga’s Chandler perfectly adjusts game
Hunter Chandler of Saratoga Springs leads Section II boys’ bowling with 233 average and already has seven perfect games.

Even though Saratoga Springs senior Hunter Chandler embraces the use of all the modern equipment available, he takes an old-school approach to adjusting his game on the lanes. It’s certainly a successful strategy.

Chandler, a sixth-year varsity performer, is already a major force in Capital Region bowling circles. He owns seven perfect games and leads the Section II boys in scoring average with a lofty 233. His Blue Streaks concluded the Suburban Council regular season with a 12-1-1 record, and he shot a 290-790 in the finale against CBA Wednesday afternoon.

“We had a pretty good year this season,” Chandler said. “With Ethan [Bowers] on the team with me, it makes me feel pretty good. We have a really good 1-2 punch.”

Chandler grew up in a bowling family, with all of his uncles, cousins and aunts ardent keglers along with his older brother, who bowled for Ballston Spa roughly 20 years ago. Hunter hung around with his brother on the baseball field and the bowling centers, learning both games from his older sibling.

An equipment buff, Chandler started out using Hammer bowling balls, later switched to MOTIV and currently uses Storm equipment. His last two perfect games were rolled with the Storm Phaze II and Phaze III, respectively. During one of those 300s, Bowers also shot a perfect game during the same match.

“I would say my style is kind of a hybrid bowler,” he explained. “I throw it hard enough to go down-and-in, but I have enough revs and hook to swing the ball when I have to. I try to bowl a lot like [PBA star] EJ Tackett. I’ve worked hard on learning how to switch my hand positions for different lane conditions. I’m kind of old-school that way. I usually make my first adjustments that way instead of changing balls.”

Chandler’s high triple in scholastic competition is an 801, but he’s also shot an 800 in open play. Extremely serious about always improving his physical and mental game, he keeps all of his scores tabulated on his cell phone.

Although he’s played baseball in various travel leagues as a catcher, center fielder and pitcher, he’s never played varsity baseball. But he plans on trying out for the team this spring for one final chance on the varsity diamond. If he’s anywhere close to as talented on the field as he is on the lanes, Blue Streaks’ opponents better watch out.

SECTIONALS LOOMING

Chandler will be one of the top bowlers to keep an eye on during the boys’ Class A sectionals next Friday at Boulevard Bowl. As usual, there will be six games of bowling, broken up by lunch. Competition starts at roughly 9 a.m.

While Chandler leads the Section II boys in scoring average by a whopping 10 pins, teammate Bowers, is second in scoring average among the boys with a 223. Columbia’s Jason Hahn is third with a 220. Mohonasen’s Josh Ross is another strong competitor and should help the Mighty Warriors challenge for the title.

Boys’ sectional competition continues Monday, Feb. 10 (Class B) and Tuesday, Feb. 11 (Class C). Saratoga Catholic is one of the favorites to take the Class B crown. Perennial power Hoosick Falls, Fort Plain and Fonda-Fultonville are top contenders in Class C.

The girls compete next Thursday. Dakota Deitz of Colonie and Morgan Hahn of Columbia are two of the top shooters in the girls’ tournament.

SCHENECTADY USBC UPDATE

February is a huge month for Schenectady USBC tournaments. In just a week, the association’s Open Tournament begins its five-day, eight-squad run Feb. 7-16 at Boulevard Bowl. Known for many years as the “City Tournament,” the Open Tournament will have a three-person team format, with an optional singles competition using the same score.

There are divisions for scratch team and scratch singles ($10 each), as well. First place for the handicap team event is $1,200, based on 80 teams. Handicap will be 90% of 240. Cost for the team event is $25 per person. Squads are Feb. 7 (6:30 p.m.), Feb. 8 (2:30 p.m.), Feb. 9
(9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m.), Feb. 15 (2:30 p.m.) and Feb. 16 (9:30 a.m., 12 and 2:30 p.m.). For the first time, brackets will be available for both scratch and handicap. For more information or entry blanks, go to www.usbc-sba.com.

Meanwhile, the 13th annual Youth Team Tournament will be held Feb. 9 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Towne Bowling Academy. Bowlers will compete in the Girls’ Division, Boys’ Division and Mixed Division.

STRIKES & SPARES

This Super Bowl weekend is loaded with tournament action for scratch bowlers. On Saturday at 1:30 p.m., Sammy V’s 10th Frame Senior Tour presents the February Eliminator at Townes Bowling Academy. Top prize is $1,000, based on 60 entries. There will be three divisions: age 49-and-under, 50-59 and 60-plus. Entry fee is $70. After four games of qualifying, one in five bowlers advance to the elimination finals in their respective divisions.

The weekend action continues Sunday with the Superbowl Bakers Doubles Tournament at 11 a.m. at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy. Entry fee is $80 per team. There will be eight games of alternate-frame baker style. Most of the Capital Region’s top scratch bowlers are entered.

The Capital District Youth Scholarship Tour returns with a tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hilltop Bowl.

Spare Time Latham hosts the next Amateur League Bowlers Association of New York (A.L.B.A.N.Y.) event Feb. 16. It will be a Valentine’s Day 9-pin no-tap tournament with a special pot for perfect games — which should be plentiful. Cost is $30 if the entry is received by Feb. 9, or $45 after that. Only bowlers with averages lower than 215 are eligible.

There is already a waiting list established for the Scratch Doubles Tournament Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center in South Glens Falls. The field is limited to 63 teams. Top prize is $2,000.

Sportsman’s Bowl hosts the 46th annual Electric City 600 Women’s Bowling Club Tournament March 8 at 1 p.m. Entry forms are available at Boulevard Bowl, Sportsman’s Bowl and Towne Bowling Academy. Any female bowler who has ever rolled a 600 triple is eligible to compete. Contact Marianne Hogle (518-393-8907) for more information.

Hometown Lanes will hold a Leap Day Scratch Tournament Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. Format will be a five-game sweeper. Entry fee is $45. First place will be $500, based on 40 entries.
