Working between 60 and 80 hours a week as a 911 Public Safety Dispatcher for the Schenectady County Unified Communications Center, Kristine Impellizzeri knows how to deal with stressful situations. Bowling is her respite from the storm.

But the 35-year-old Schenectady High School and SUNY Schenectady graduate enjoys getting her competitive juices flowing and doesn’t mind mixing it up on the lanes.
A member of one of the most successful bowling families in the Capital Region, Impellizzeri took a few years off from bowling competition. But now she’s back in the heat of the battle, participating in two elite scratch leagues, subbing in another and even showing off her talents in tournaments.

She’s averaging a career-best 221 in the Capital District All Star league at Sportsman’s Bowl, where she bowls on the same team as her brother, Jason. Impellizzeri also recently joined the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League at Towne Bowling Academy and is averaging 217 through 39 games. As a sub in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league, also at Towne Bowling Academy, she is averaging 219 through 44 games.

Bowling is in Impellizzeri’s blood, and she’s starting to reach the potential that many observers saw in her years ago. She’s the daughter of the late Frank Impellizzeri, the Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer who was one of the best keglers in the area for many decades. Known as the “Iron Man” for not missing a Northern Bowlers Association event during his heyday, Kris’ father won numerous local tournaments and was famous for his accuracy and consistency.

“My father taught me how to bowl, and I kind of bowl like my father, more down and in,” Impellizzeri said. “I like to stand on about the 15th board and shoot out to about the eighth or 10th board. My ball speed is about 15-16 miles per hour. I like to use DV8 equipment most of the time, and I don’t use a spare ball. I just flatten out my wrist like my father showed me.”

Impellizzeri, whose uncles and other brother, Frankie Impellizzeri Jr., also excelled on the lanes, grew up bowling in the junior program at Sportsman’s Bowl. She bowled varsity for the Schenectady High School team and also competed for the SUNY Schenectady squad for two years, earning an invitation to Reno as one of the top NJCAA bowlers in the region.

She gave up bowling competitively for personal reasons a few years ago, but is back better than ever, thanks to a few tweaks to her game.

“I’m more mentally into the game this year. I’m also learning how to roll the ball better,” she explained. “I used to loft the ball and throw it over the arrows. Now, I’ve learned how to actually roll the ball, square my shoulders more and move my feet better. I’m staying more consistent with my speed. I had someone work with me at the beginning of the season, and he’s helped me quite a bit. I’ve always loved the competition.”

That competition is even sweeter when it’s among her siblings.

“We still compete, just like we did when we were kids.” she said. “But it’s playful competition. It’s nothing too serious. In fact, one of my bowling goals, along with getting my first 800 triple, is beating my brother, Jason, in average this year.”

Impellizzeri’s high triple is a 797, and she has two perfect games to her credit. She also won this season’s New York State Women’s 600 Bowling Club regional tournament.

When she’s not bowling or handling 911 public safety calls, Impellizzeri manages her own beauty company, Younique Beauty with a Twist by Kris.

Her day job is much more frantic. It’s mandatory to be a good listener.

“I’m a dispatcher for the whole of Schenectady County, and that includes the city of Schenectady, Rotterdam, Scotia, the Sheriff’s Department and the State Police,” she said. “It’s definitely a very stressful job. When I answer a call, I usually explain that I’m there to help and not there to worsen the situation. I try to calm them down and control their breathing. It’s my job to get all the information I can get from them and try to get them to calm down a little and give me the information I need.

“A lot of it comes second nature to me now, but every once in a while, a case really hits home for me, like when it’s a suicidal subject or has something to do with little babies. Then, I just try to keep my composure until I get off the phone. It’s tough.”

Impellizzeri also finds time to be a member of the Schenectady USBC Board of Directors, which is timely this week, because the Schenectady USBC Open Tournament kicks off Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Boulevard Bowl. The three-person tournament continues Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Next weekend, tournament squads will be held Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 9:30 a.m., 12 and 2:30 p.m.

Entry fee is $25 per bowler, plus $10 for optional singles, using the same team score, optional scratch team or optional scratch singles. Handicap will be 90% of 240. First place for the team event will be $1,200, based on 80 entries. Entry blanks are available at Boulevard, Sportsman’s Bowl and Towne Bowling Academy, as well as on the Schenectady USBC Website (www.usbc-sba.com). For more information, call Keith Lawyer (518-300-0209) or Lloyd Denny (518-355-5632).

The association’s Youth Junior Team Tournament will be held Sunday at Towne Bowling Academy. There will be two squads, at 1 and 3:30 p.m.

STRIKES & SPARES

Town & Country bowlers Nick Harris and Kyle Haines won the annual Super Bowl Baker Doubles Tournament last Sunday at Uncle Sam Lanes by 80 pins.

Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Carol Gianotti and Pam Buckner will be inducted into the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame May 13 in Las Vegas. Dorin-Ballard, 55, captured 20 PWBA titles, including the 2001 USBC Queens. She was the 2001 PWBA Player of the Year after winning a record-tying seven titles. Gianotti, 52, won 16 PWBA titles from 1989-2000, including four in 1992. She was PWBA Player of the Year in 1998. Buckner, 73, won seven PWBA crowns, including the 1976 USBC Queens.

Spare Time Latham hosts the next Amateur Bowlers Association of New York (A.L.B.A.N.Y.) event Feb. 16. It will be a Valentine’s Day 9-pin no-tap tournament with a special pot for perfect games — which should be plentiful. Cost is $30 if the entry is received by Sunday, or $45 after that. Only bowlers with averages lower than 215 are eligible.

Thursday’s poor weather conditions forced the postponement of the Section II Girls Bowling Championships at Boulevard Bowl to next Wednesday.

The CBS Sports Network will have live coverage of seven PWBA stepladder finals this season, including all the majors.

The Amsterdam USBC City Championship will be contested over the next two weekends at Kelly’s Imperial Lanes. It begins Sunday, with the first and second rounds and then continues Feb. 16, with the third round, semifinals and finals. The top 32 bowlers in association are seeded in two-game matches. Top prize will be $500.
