It’s not surprising that Schenectady USBC Hall of Famer Keith Lawyer continues to support the game he loves, both on and off the lanes.

The former Schenectady Police Department officer has devoted his entire adult life to serving his community, and he’s just as comfortable doing it behind the scenes on a computer as he was dressed in blue and walking the beat. His current role is the tournament co-director of the Schenectady USBC Open Tournament.

Lawyer, 56, was a member of the Schenectady police force in various capacities for 23 years. He was a patrolman, a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer, a detective in the youth division and then a “regular” detective to close out his police career. Before that, he served in the military as a reservist and was an ROTC graduate at Siena College.

Although he didn’t bowl in high school, Lawyer competed in both the now-defunct Mont Pleasant Lanes and Boulevard Bowl junior programs before joining the first SUNY Schenectady bowling team that included the likes of John Jablonski and the late Jimmy Burch. Instead of knocking down pins, he was knocking down opponents as a wrestler for Linton High School. He had a record of 85-30, finished second in the Section II Class A Championship one year and qualified for the wrestling sectionals four times.

Even though he was plenty busy with his police duties for more than two decades, Lawyer ran the junior bowling program for 16 years at the now-defunct Rolling Greens Lanes and also coached a team from Boulevard Bowl in the Joey Schmidt Junior Pro-Scoring League. He was a member of the Schenectady Bowling Association Junior Board of Directors for 16 years, and then joined the SBA’s senior board in 2010.

After he stepped down from the board during the Schenectady USBC transition and merger with the Schenectady-Scotia Women’s Bowling Association and Schenectady Junior Bowling Association, he decided to remain close to the board by helping to run the Schenectady USBC tournaments as tournament co-director. He’s the guy who does most of the tournament prep work on the computer, compiling entries, checking sanctions and welcoming bowlers into the event. He’s an invaluable asset to the association.

“By national rules, I couldn’t work on the board for a year after the transition, so I took a year off. I’m giving the slot to someone else a little younger,” he said. “But serving in this role as tournament director allows me to come down here, hang out with the bowlers, and keep my relationships with all the people I’ve met in this game. John Mecca helps me out a lot. He, like me, is not on the board, but we both enjoy helping out running the tournament.”

Despite a pair of bad knees, sore hips and a balky back after falling out of a tree last year, Lawyer continues to bowl, even though not like he used to. He’s rolled 51 perfect games, owns 15 800 triples and has a high triple of 845, as well as a high four-game series of 1,107. He currently competes in both the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League Monday nights at Towne Bowling Academy and in the Frank DePalma Boulevard Classic at Boulevard Bowl.

Lawyer said he was devastated to learn that one of his dearest friends in the game, Freddy Crahula, just died recently. Crahula ran the pro shop for many years at Rolling Greens and was instrumental in Lawyer’s long run helping to coordinate junior bowling programs in the area.

Meanwhile, Lawyer’s pet project, the Schenectady USBC Open Tournament, wraps up this weekend with one squad Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (already filled up) and three squads on Sunday at 9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Cost per entry in the three-person team event is $25 per bowler. There are optional $10 fees for handicap singles, scratch singles and scratch team events, using the same scores.

Next up on the Schenectady USBC tournament schedule is the Women’s Singles Championship March 14-15 at Sportsman’s Bowl. Each squad will be at 2 p.m. Entry fee is $25.

STRIKES & SPARES

Craig Morrell defeated Del Picard 183-155 in the championship match to win the annual Troy Bowling Association 700 Tournament Saturday at Hilltop Bowl. A total of 134 bowlers competed in two qualifying squads, with 10 bowlers from each squad advancing to match play. Morrell earned $599, and Picard pocketed $500. Semifinalists Scott Rogers and Clay Reiniger Jr. cashed for $250 each, and quarterfinalists Dan Rowe, Kate Gardner, Ron Gardner and George Gorman III won $125 each.

Ryan Galli and Phil Drumm beat Jim Comette and Eric Copping 473-459 in the championship game to win the Scratch Doubles tournament last weekend at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center in South Glens Falls. Fifty-eight teams competed. Galli and Drumm split $2,200, while Comette and Copping split $1,200. The tandems of Justin Barcomb with Roy Vanderbogart and Jeff Bassard with David Simard each shared $680. Jody Becker with Warren Guernsey, John Ferraro with Mike Zarnick, Brian LeClair with Connor LeClair and Darrell Conrad with Del Picard each split $560 per team.

Hometown Lanes hosts its Leap Day Scratch 5-Game Marathon Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. Top prize will be E500, based on 40 entries. Entry fee is $45.

The 17th annual Joe and Tom Donato Scratch Singles Tournament will have its first qualifier Feb. 24 at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy. Entry fee is $60. There are currently 16 qualifiers scheduled, with more being added. Top prize will be $3,200 guaranteed, with the finals set for March 24 at Towne Bowling Academy.

Town & Country Lanes’ annual Invitational is currently having in-house qualifying for its league bowlers. The unique event has an NCAA-bracket format.

The Amsterdam USBC City Championship at Kelly’s Imperial Lanes is down to eight bowlers vying for the title. They will square off in the final rounds Sunday. The final eight are Mike Miseno, Billy McGaffin Jr., Tim Grant, George Savoie, Bill Mason, Gene Piurek, Jon Schultz and Dave Tollner.
