Individual honors and state meet berths will be up for grabs at the Section II Division I and Division II wrestling championships Saturday at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls.

Here are several things to know ahead of the event.

SCHEDULE

Preliminary wrestling begins at 9:45 a.m., followed by semifinals and wrestlebacks at 11:15 a.m., consolation semifinals at 3:30 p.m., and consolation finals at 4:30 p.m. After a 6:30 p.m. awards ceremony and the entrance of finalists at 7 p.m., the finals will begin around 7:15 p.m. The finals will take place on two mats.

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The 15 individual champions from Division I and Division II will earn an automatic invite to the state meet scheduled for Feb. 28-29 at Times Union Center in Albany. Additional athletes will make the Section II state team as wild card entrants. Fifty-three athletes represented Section II at the state level in 2019, with Stevo Poulin of Shenendehowa winning his second title, Zack Lawrence of Duanesburg winning his first and Caleb Svingala of Maple Hill placing second.

RETURNING CHAMPIONS

Brock DelSignore of Shenendehowa and Svingala are both three-time Section II division champions, and Shen's Poulin and Ethan Cooper of Cobleskill-Richmondville are two-time division champions. Among the other returning champions are Jake Deguire of Mohonasen, Sean Malenfant of Averill Park, Peter Meshkov of Niskayuna, Kaden Gransbury of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, Aiden Cullen of Greenvillle, Alec Richards of Corinth and Jeff Crooks of Cobleskill-Richmondville.

Last year, Meshkov decisioned Colden Dorfman of Shenendehowa in the 2019 Section II Division I 160-pound final, but the Niskayuna wrestler sustained a fractured sternum while doing so and could not compete at the state championships. Dorfman took his place at the state meet and placed fifth.

LEADING THE WAY

Twenty-one schools have at least one No. 1 seed. Shenendehowa (Poulin, Dorfman, DelSignore), Niskayuna (Jack Schiavo, Ben Catrambone, Meshkov) and Mohonasen (Clayton O'Connor, Deguire, Camrin Russell) have three No. 1 seeds in Division I, and Shaker (Michael Santore, Ryan Stein) has two. Cobleskill-Richmondville is the only Division II team with multiple No. 1s, with three (Greg Hotaling, Cooper, Crooks).

POULIN WATCH

Poulin, a two-time state champion, is 40-0 entering the Division I meet with 23 pins. Five of those wins came when the 113-pound junior earned the prestigious Eastern State Classic title, and three of them came at the state dual meet tournament, where the Plainsmen reached the semifinal round. Poulin also picked up individual titles at the Clyde Cole Invitational, Beast of the East, Bethlehem Holiday Classic and Peru Invitational. He is the state's No. 1 ranked large-school 113-pounder by New York Wrestling News.
