ROTTERDAM - A Rotterdam man has been arrested, accused of trying to coerce someone he believed to be 12 years old to rape, federal prosecutors said.
Randy Eignor, 49, was arrested Wednesday in Colonie, and charged with attempting to entice and coerce a child to engage in sexual activity. He faces up to life in prison, if convicted.
Eignor is accused of attempting to entice and coerce the person he believed to be a child to engage in sex. He is accused of doing so by exchanging hundreds of sexually explicit messages over the period of days with the person who turned out to be an undercover law enforcement officer, according to the federal complaint.
The messages then led to an agreement to meet at a location in Colonie Wednesday. He was met there by multiple law enforcement officers and taken into custody.
He soon then admitted to investigators that he exchanged the messages with the person he believed to have been 12 and that he planned had to engage in sexual activity with that person, the complaint reads.
Eignor was arraigned Thursday in U.S. District Court in Albany and ordered held pending trial.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and its Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes members of the state police, Colonie Police Department and the Rotterdam Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua R. Rosenthal.
