Mechanicville High School senior Jacob LaFountain is a multi-talented athlete for all seasons. He excels on the lanes, on the mound, on the soccer pitch and on the gridiron. In all four sports, he prefers power over finesse.

Currently, LaFountain is the star of the Mechanicville bowling team, which recently finished second to Schalmont in the Section II Class B tournament at Boulevard Bowl. Although his team barely missed out on a sectional crown, he secured a spot on the Composite Team for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships next month at Strike N Spare Lanes in Syracuse by shooting a six-game block of 1,356.

“It’s a great feeling knowing I’m going to states,” LaFountain said. “This is my senior year, and it’s my last chance. Last year, I missed by just two pins. It was tough that my team isn’t going with me.”

LaFountain is definitely a product of the modern bowling game. He rolls the ball between 18-19 miles per hour, has plenty of revs, and bends the ball a ton.

“I’ve always wanted to be a little different than everyone else,” he said. “I stayed one-handed, but I throw it a lot like my brother does. My father and my brother taught me how to bowl. They are both averaging at least 220 at Hometown Lanes.”

Although LaFountain gives his father and brother credit for teaching him the fundamentals, he enjoys making his game unique. He’s usually playing deep inside on the lane because of all the speed and revs he has on the ball.

“I would say that playing baseball is a major part of why I’m able to roll the ball the way I do,” he said. “I’m always working on my arm strength for pitching, and I’m more of a power pitcher.”

LaFountain’s career high single is a 299, rolled in the Wasaren League Championships. He has a high triple of 833. He averaged 218 for Mechanicville, and has averaged as high as 221 in league play. He’s averaging 213 in the Joey Schmidt Capital District Junior Pro-Scoring League.

“I use several different brands of equipment,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of Storm balls, two Hammer balls and one Ebonite. Plus, I have a plastic spare ball that looks like a baseball.”

LaFountain said that even though baseball is his favorite sport, he will always continue to bowl for recreation because he loves the game. Right now, he has a couple of immediate goals.

“My goal right now is to win the state championship,” he said. “I also want to get my first 300 game.”

Meanwhile, baseball season is just around the corner, and LaFountain will be pitching and playing shortstop for the Raiders.

“My dream is to, hopefully, play pro baseball,” he said. “I’m going to play baseball for [SUNY] Cortland next year. I’m not sure, yet, but I also might kick for them on the football team.”

LaFountain keeps batters off-guard with an array of a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, slider, curveball and change-up.

During the fall season, LaFountain split time as a defensive back on the soccer team and a placekicker on the football team.

“I would go to my soccer practice before football practice. When games conflicted, I would usually go to may soccer game first, because they start at 4:15, play the first half, and then leave and go to my football game,” he said.

“I think playing a sport every season is pretty easy for me. It keeps me occupied and out of trouble.”
