ROTTERDAM -- The town will hold an introductory open house and public workshop for the town's comprehensive land use plan update on Thursday at the Rotterdam Junction fire station on Main Street.

The meeting, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., is the second in a series of meetings being held as the town seeks to update its comprehensive plan for the first time since 2001. The meeting will include a chance for residents to examine maps and comment on existing land uses, and hear a presentation by M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying of Clifton Park, the consultant helping develop the plan, working with a citizen committee.

"This is a great opportunity for all Rotterdam residents to have their voices heard as we create a road map for Rotterdam's future progress and growth," said Town Supervisor Steven A. Tommasone.

The plan is expected to make recommendations regarding land use, economic growth, sustainability, community identity, housing and transportation. The goal is to develop a vision that will guide town decision-making over the next 10 to 20 years.

The first public meeting was held in November at the South Schenectady fire station. Meetings are expected to be held around different parts of the town as the planning process proceeds over the next 18 months.

The town has also established a project website at www.RotterdamNYPlan.com were the public can examine documents and comment.

Rotterdam today has neighborhoods varying from industrial parks and 1950s suburban-style housing to a large shopping mall, numerous apartment complexes, small historic hamlets like Rotterdam Junction and Pattersonville and nature preserves in the western Rotterdam hills. The population is about 29,000. The town's population in recent decades has been fairly steady, after seeing significant growth in the 1940s and 1950s.
