Meeting set on cleanup of Schenectady Superfund site

SCHENECTADY — A public meeting will be held later this month on cleanup plans for the Mid-Town Laundry site at 1122-1124 State St.

The location is a state Superfund site due to soil, groundwater and soil vapor contamination. The primary contaminant is tetrachloroethene, a chlorinated volatile organic compound used as a dry cleaning solvent. A dry cleaner operated on site from 1969 to 1987.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is overseeing the cleanup, which is expected to cost $1.36 million.

Project information can be obtained online at the DECinfo Locator or at the Phyllis Bornt Branch Library, 948 State St.

The public will be able to comment at the meeting, which will be held at the library branch at 6 p.m. March 25.

For those who can’t attend the meeting, DEC is accepting written comments about the proposed cleanup plan through March 27. They can be mailed to: Daniel McNally, project manager, NYSDEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233 or emailed to [email protected]
