As a retired manager at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Joe VanDerLinden is a numbers guru.

That love of facts and figures comes in handy, as his spectacular career on the lanes includes a plethora of impressive statistics. He added to that list recently with two more 800 triples and a 1,058 four-game series. In the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial Mixed Doubles league Wednesday nights at Towne Bowling Academy, he rolled an 800 for his first three games en route to that big four-game set. Monday night, he fired an impressive 846 triple in the Reis Group Kim Brown Memorial City League, also at Towne.

The Guilderland High School and Siena College graduate recently turned 57 years old, but he’s still outperforming the youngsters in his favorite sport. Known for his simple down-and-in approach and amazing spare game, the Schenectady USBC Hall of Fame member once rolled an 878 triple that included a pair of 300 games. He averaged an almost unbelievable 253 in the Edgewood Independent league in the 2011 season.

VanDerLinden owns 70 perfect games and 77 800 triples, but perhaps his most impressive achievement is winning 11 out of the last 12 high average titles in the high-powered City league, to go along with 11 more average crowns in the Edgewood Independent league.

“My goals are to win high average again on Monday and also for the first time on Wednesday nights, and I’d like to win it again on Thursday nights, but I’m already still leading that league. I’ve got some work to do in my other two leagues battling Liz Kuhlkin. We have a good-natured rivalry going on,” he said.

VanDerLinden and Kuhlkin, the Professional Women’s Bowling Association standout from Rotterdam, are currently in the top two spots in both the City League and the Mixed Doubles league in average. They also pair up as teammates in many tournaments.

“I’ve been bowling in more tournaments over the last few years, and I’ve had some success in them,” said VanDerLinden, who has won several Schenectady USBC Open Championships and a few Towne Bowling Academy Handicap Team events among his many tournament titles. “Over the last few years, fewer people are calling me just a house bowler or a house rat, because I do travel and compete. Liz and I are good teammates, because we complement each other very well. We have big differences in our games. Liz likes to change balls early. I grew up making adjustment with my hand positions, speed and moving my feet on the lanes. We don’t fight, but we sometimes bump heads on what’s the best adjustment. We both learn from each other.”

It was Kuhlkin who suggested VanDerLinden’s recent new ball purchase, a pink Glam ball that helped him roll his last two 800 triples.

“I don’t mind the pink color,” he said with a laugh. “I’m 57 years old, and Liz is just 26, but I don’t mind learning from her.”

VanDerLinden also has a Brunswick Hero, a Brunswick Prism and a DV8 Instigator in his current arsenal. After struggling early this season, he has tweaked his equipment and his timing.

“Sometimes I tend to carry the ball on my first step,” VanDerLinden said. I struggle early in the season with my timing a little, and you can’t always tell by watching me, but I can tell if I’m leaving a half 10-pin and not getting out of the ball the right way. I’m constantly tweaking my timing. If I carry the ball on my first step, it screws up my timing. When I start pushing the ball away, that’s when I started to click. But I’ve got to keep my feet slow at the same time. Timing and footwork are very important for me.”

VanDerLinden, who won a Northern Bowlers Association title in 1987, is definitely one of the best, most consistent and most accurate bowlers in Capital Region history, but it doesn’t come by accident, and he doesn’t take his accomplishments for granted.

“I’m not stupid. I know I’m getting older, and there will be a time when I can’t keep it going. I thought about that when I was struggling earlier in the season,” he said. “But even when I started slowly and took a nose dive, I don’t give up. I would say that the thing I’m most proud of in my bowling career is winning 11 out of the last 12 City League average titles. That’s a tough league with a lot of great bowlers in it. It’s a house shot, but sometimes I’ve had to play different lines, and other times I’ve had to beat other people out for the title.

“You can always have bad years in this game, but I try to keep everything simple. I try to work out when I can. I’ve had some physical issues, and I will say that it takes longer for me to get loose in practice, but I’m still grinding.”
