ALBANY - The University at Albany has postponed its May commencement ceremonies over COVID-19.

The school made the announcement online Thursday afternoon in a letter signed by school President Havidán Rodriguez and Provost Carol H. Kim.

"As we continue to take the necessary steps to combat COVID-19, we have made the very difficult but necessary decision to postpone our May 2020 Commencement ceremonies," the letter read Thursday.

"We know that this is a major disappointment, but given the circumstances, it was simply unavoidable," the letter continued.

Students who complete their degree requirements will receive their degree by mail, the letter read.

The school is reviewing possible alternatives to the May commencement and will share details when available, the letter reads.

"We know that you have worked very hard to reach this critical milestone. As an institution of higher education, we hold dear the history and traditions of our commencement ceremonies to celebrate your success and the completion of your degree," the letter read. "However, at this time we must focus on two primary concerns: first, your health and safety; and second, supporting you to reach the finish line of graduation—especially in this new remote learning environment."
