ALBANY — Sophomore Malachi de Sousa is leaving the UAlbany men’s basketball program and has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

UAlbany head coach Will Brown confirmed de Sousa’s departure, which was first posted on verbalcommits.com’s social-media account.

“Hopeful that a fresh start will be good for Malachi,” Brown wrote in a text message to The Daily Gazette. “He is a good kid. We wish him the best and will assist him in any way that we can.”

After playing sparingly as a freshman, the 6-foot-6 de Sousa started 21 games as a sophomore and averaged 5.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 24.2 minutes per game.

“Well, you know, just think it’s time I get a fresh start and change of scenery,” de Sousa wrote in a message to The Daily Gazette. “I’m appreciative of the opportunity they gave me and am grateful for it. But I just think it’s time to start a new journey.”

With de Sousa’s departure, UAlbany has four open scholarships for the 2020-21 season.
