AMSTERDAM - Amsterdam Police are seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect in store thefts that they say took advantage of coronavirus mask guidelines to hide his identity.

Police are investigating two separate thefts from city stores, one on May 18 and the other Tuesday, police said.

In both instances, the suspect entered the store "taking advantage of the current health guidelines by wearing a mask to hide his identity," police said in a Facebook post.

The suspect asked to purchase a carton of cigarettes and then used what police believe to be an obsolete bank card to distract the clerk and then flee the store with the property, police said.

Police believe the suspect was driving an older model gray Honda. Police also released a surveillance still of the man.

"Local stores should be on the look out for this suspect tactic," police wrote.

Anyone with information on the identity of the suspect is asked to contact police at 518-842-1100, Ext. 227 or email at [email protected]
