NISKAYUNA -- The busy intersection of River and Rosendale roads will be closed for a week in early July as work crews finish construction of a roundabout there, Schenectady County officials said.

The intersection will close at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 6, and is scheduled to re-open on Monday, July 13, with the roundabout in place. While the intersection will be entirely closed, River and Rosendale will remain open for local traffic only.

The roundabout is being built this year in a $1.8 million project that is intended to relieve long rush-hour backups at the intersection, which is part of a key route between General Electric Global Research, the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, and residential and commercial areas in Niskayuna and Colonie. About 10,000 vehicles per day use the intersection.

The county Department of Public Works has issued recommended detours:

-- For River Road southbound to Rosendale westbound: south on Van Antwerp to Balltown Road south to Union Street east to state Route 7.

-- For River Road southbound to Rosendale eastbound: south on Van Antwerp to Balltown to Union to Route 7 east, then north on Mohawk Road.

-- Rosendale Road eastbound: Route 7, to north on Mohawk Road, which is also Co. Route 5.

-- Rosendale Road westbound: South on Mohawk to west on Route 7.
