SCHENECTADY - A city man fled officers on foot late last Thursday and a gunshot went off from the suspect's gun during the ensuing foot chase, police said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Arrested in the incident was Lahnel J. Sexton, 20, of Schenectady. He was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m. that night in the area of Cutler Street, police said.

Officers responded to the 900 block there for a report of a person with a weapon. A man had entered the victim's vehicle there and attempted to rob him, police said. The victim was able to leave his vehicle and notify police, police said.

Arriving officers found the vehicle with the suspect still inside. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers gave chase.

Officers followed the man into the alley behind 942 Cutler St. As officers entered the ally, a gunshot was heard coming from the immediate area where the suspect had ran, police said. The endangerment charge accuses Sexton of "recklessly" discharging a round from his gun as he ran from officers.

Officers set up a perimeter and soon found the man hiding on the front porch of a nearby residence. Officers took him into custody without further incident.

Police also soon located a Ruger LCP handgun and a magazine containing 9mm rounds.

Police based the weapons charge on officer accounts, admissions from Sexton and video evidence and the endangerment count on admissions from Sexton, according to allegations filed in court.

Sexton was arraigned and ordered held on $50,000 bail. He remained held Wednesday.
