SARATOGA COUNTY - A fiery tanker truck crash Wednesday morning was caused after the truck driver fell asleep, the driver told troopers, state police said.

The crash happened at about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday on the Northway, just south of Exit 15. The subsequent smoke and explosion were seen and heard from the Saratoga Race Course.

State police identified the driver as Anthony J. Fronte, of West Haven, Conn. He told troopers that he briefly fell asleep when he began to go off the roadway, state police said.

The vehicle then exited the east shoulder, hit a curb and then a guide rail before it came to rest in a ditch. The truck then became fully engulfed in flames, causing damage to the Lake Avenue Bridge overpass and shutting northbound Thruway travel into the early afternoon.

There were no injuries. A state police release did not address whether any citations were issued.
