Area Stock Car Racing: Friesen wins at Albany-Saratoga

Last Friday saw teams headed in all directions as Albany-Saratoga and Afton Motorsports Park were able to race. Stewart Friesen went to Albany-Saratoga, where he took the modified win over Marc Johnson, Peter Britten, Bobby Hackel IV and Jack Lehner.

With Chad Jeseo and Scott Towslee, the leaders of the DIRTcar pro stock division feature, busy crashing on the final lap as they approached the flagger’s stand, Luke Horning squeaked by to take the victory. Towslee was credited with second, followed by Josh Coonradt, Dean Charbonneau and Kim Duell.

Brian Calabrese of Johnstown scored the 602 sportsman feature in his No. 21C. Andrew Buff, Connor Cleveland, Pat Jones and Ron Proctor completed the top five.
Craig Hanson of Johnstown had a good fourth-place finish in his No. 20C at Afton Motorsports Park. Andy Bachetti was the feature winner. Darwin Greene and Jim Becker finished 10th and 23rd, respectively. 

Last Saturday, Bobby Varin finally unveiled his new ride for 2020. The No. 18V Bicknell chassis made its first on-track appearance at Thunder Mountain Speedway. Varin started 22nd and finished seventh. Billy Decker scored his second Thunder Mountain win of 2020. Derrick McGrew Jr. finished 16th in the 35-lap feature.

Also last Saturday, the C.R.S.A. 305 sprint cars were out at Land Of Legends Raceway in Canandaigua, where Cory Sparks of Edinburgh scored his first win of the season. Darryl Ruggles and Jeff Trombley of Rotterdam completed the podium finishes. Josh Flint of Cherry Valley finished 14th, and Josh Pieniazek of Rotterdam finished 19th.

Last Sunday, Glen Ridge Motorsports Park had another first-time winner. Brendan Gibbons scored the Red Chair DIRTcar 602 sportsman victory over Travis Green, Justin Buff, Fred Proctor and Joe Orlando.

Horning claimed the Yurkewecz Auto Crushers DIRTcar pro stock feature over Beau Ballard, Coonradt, Justin Knight and David DeMorest.

Stephen Gray won the limited sportsman feature over Troy Zilles, James Venditti, Carter Gibbons and Issac Walker.

Adam Tranka claimed the street stock feature over Damon Anderson, Matt Mosher, Harley Shepard and Ken Allen.

The car counts at The Ridge have grown steadily in 2020.

Glen Ridge will have a full program Sunday night. Unfortunately there will be no spectators allowed in the stands.

The Short Track Super Series was at the Baps (formerly Susquehanna) Speedway in Pennsylvania last Sunday. Located nearly 300 miles and five hours away, it helped a little that some teams did not have a race at Fonda the night before. Area teams that made the trip included Stewart and Jessica Friesen and Ricky Davis. Stewart finished second in the 50-lap feature behind Billy Pauch Jr., with Matt Sheppard taking third. Jessica Friesen finished 10th, and Davis 14th.

Tuesday saw the Penn Can Speedway in Pennsylvania hold a 40-lap feature for the modifieds and Stewart Friesen again was the winner. Dan Creeden and Larry Wight finished second and third, respectively.

Saturday night, the Dirt Modified Nostalgia Tour will be racing their three vintage divisions at Thunder Mountain, near Center Lisle.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Vermont is racing Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a 35-lap 358 modified event paying $1,500, plus the limited sportsman and mini-stock division. The pro stocks have a big race, along with all weekly divisions Sunday.

Here is the tentative Fonda revised schedule. Saturday, Aug. 1, modifieds, 602 sportsman, pro stocks, limited sportsman, street stocks, and 4-cylinder cruisers.

Wednesday, Aug. 5 is the 7 come 11 special. Modified 30 laps for $3,000 or $3,711 to win, if you cash in your chips and pre-register. 602 sportsman, pro stocks, 25 show-up points for all divisions.

Saturday, Aug. 15 is Championship Night. Modifieds, 602 sportsman, pro stock, limited sportsman, street stocks, and 4-cylinder cruisers will run. Rain date is Aug. 29.
On Thursday, Dodge City Speedway announced that it was cancelling Friday night’s program due to the latest round of restrictions put into place by the local government.
