DEC plans guided Catskill hikes

CATSKILLS

The state Department of Environmental Conservation will be offering guided hikes as part of the newly launched Hike with Us • Catskills program for new and beginning hikers, the department announced on Wednesday.

"As summer fades and fall begins, the Catskill Park is a short drive for millions of New Yorkers and provides great opportunities for families and individuals looking to get outside and explore," said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos.

Hikes range from two to six miles, and will be held in Greene, Sullivan and Ulster counties.

The following guided hikes still have spaces available, and participants are encouraged to sign-up early because space is limited:

On Saturday, Sept. 7: hikes to the Cabot Mountain LookoutAlder Lake, and the North South Lake Ashley Falls Loop.

On Saturday, Sept. 14: Onteora Lake; on Saturday, Sept. 21: Vernooy Kill Falls.

In October, Saturday, Oct. 19: North Point; Saturday, Oct. 26: Overlook Mountain Fire Tower and Trout Pond.

For experienced hikers, DEC is also offering the Catskills Fire Tower Five Challenge, in which hikers are asked to snap selfies at each fire tower, and send photos to DEC for special prizes.

All are part of a state initiative to get more people to experience the outdoors.
