Sunrise expands pet-welcome rental policy

ALBANY -- Sunrise Management & Consulting is adding a pets-welcome policy at more of its rental properties.

Albany-based Sunrise owns or manages about 1,500 rental units in the Capital Region, and last year it created a Pets are Welcome community at the new Van Allen Apartments in North Greenbush.

This week it announced it is expanding the policy to Homeroom Lofts Apartments in Averill Park; Long Pond Village in Rotterdam; and Draper Lofts Apartments in Rotterdam, which is nearing the end of conversion from schoolhouse to residence.

The policy dictates that dogs be evaluated individually for their personality, rather than banned because of their size or breed. It helps address a major problem for pet owners -- what to do with companion animals when relocating. The ASPCA reported that 20 percent of all pets surrendered by owners are surrendered because the owner can’t find rental housing that will accommodate them.
