Johnston won't be coming to Union, signs with Flyers
Andrew Johnston won't be joining the Union hockey team this fall.
The Humboldt Broncos forward has signed a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.
The 20-year-old Johnston, who had verbally committed to Union, had 29 goals and 52 assists for the Broncos, champions of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Anavent. The Anavent Cup pits the winner of the SJHL against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion. He had 10 goals and four assists in 16 playoff games.
Johnston helped the Broncos to a 4-0 record in the preliminary round of the Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior "A" Tournament, scoring three game-winning goals. Johnston finished the tournament with five goals and four assists.
Union coach Rick Bennett declined to comment.
